BEFORE THE SUN I will not walk away until I get a picture and I won’t leave without a fight. a simple hearted sketch maybe something richer I’ll need some time to get it right. I cannot hold with those who have no sense of wonder for them the only shade is grey. I’ve seen a rainbow in the color of the thunder and in the dark before the day. it’s one of those days when I rise before the sun does, and I look forward to the light. in so many ways it seems we live life like we’re dreaming; when every net we cast is teeming and every shore we scan we’re scheming for some old souvenir to get us through the year and then there’s the gentle rain at night. ©2002RobertHannan

st.kitts 02:00
ST KITTS I say the angelus and the morning climbs sleepy and slow out of bed slip into the cool stone church your only sin is your skin burned a hot salsa red when we want something missing we call on st. anthony or st. jude for the cause that was lost all the cause of your cares but when we lose our way we fly off for st. christopher this heavenly haven has answered our prayers ©2004RobertHannan

almost time 03:09
ALMOST TIME it’s almost time to spread the blanket and fall asleep under the naked sky whatever you want now you can water those weeds or slash the roots you need so much to untie Just like the night we laughed so hard that it brought the tears to your eyes Or the days that we lived together she made me better I can’t forget her now remember that present I said I was bringing you’ll be happy to know that I didn’t forget I’m surprising myself with some of the songs that I’m singing and I’m keeping my whistle wet I wish I was older, I wish I was younger I wish I was somewhere in somebody’s dream so pick a card, pretty soon we’ll be going under you go chasing the cow and you’ll curdle the cream so pick a pink posy and plant it then promptly and it will keep we don’t need the reason why I don’t want to crawl, ‘cause I know I can walk and I think I can run but I wish I could fly in a minute or so think I’ll have to be going let me know if you miss me is more what I mean and there’s only one boat that this boy will be rowing one that goes merrily merrily merrily, gently down the stream ©2004Robert Hannan

CURTAIN OF BEADS your broken curtain of beads is what I love you for they open up with such ease and you never lock your door so I could follow you and bring some love into the room and I made your bed and I rubbed your head your broken curtain of beads is what I love you for a storm is tossing your seas can’t even find the floor when will this tangle release so you can see the shore? when you’re not wide awake sometimes a gentle shake will do or I call up the stairs because I know you’re there ©2004RobertHannan

steeplebush 02:41
STEEPLEBUSH a little spray of steeplebush, a sad farewell impending; for your leaves are looking older and your bloom is bending low. already late in summer when she picked you by the wayside, and she put you in a tulip vase where spring will sometimes go. I’d never ask for anything I didn’t have to give; a sunny morning windowsill, a now, late afternoon. And life is like an interlude, we’re fortunate to live, and the steeplebush is fading in a fair September moon. you were waiting to be noticed when she brought you to our senses, then we saw you on occasion from the corner of our eye. but you hadn’t seen it all before she brought from the breezes by the wayside, to a table near a painting of the sky. ©2004RobertHannan

fly take 3 02:30
FLY I can fly so I know from heaven’s eye it’s all a show we never die we just ebb and flow I can fly so I know Before I was graceless and before I was green And I would never even wonder how I could have been careless and I might have been mean I did not deserve to take a bow I wouldn’t want to be there now then I find it comes down to this you can be kind and you can always count on a kiss but don’t be blind ‘cos there are certain things you’ll miss and you will find it comes down to this I gave at the office and I gave at the door I even gave it on the telephone I sometimes was sorry that I couldn’t give more but that was long before I’d ever flown and I didn’t want to be alone I wanted some meaning and I wanted to feel that there was something in the stars for me I needed redeeming and I started to kneel before the fire of the burning tree it was the only place that I could see and in the end i just had to try i found a friend and she made me fly sometimes you have to bend' and i finally found out why so in the end i just had to fly ©2004RobertHannan

I was on my way to the city of sin through the city of angels never meant for the house to win I was aware of the dangers there some men sell their souls for silver lose it all and they spit and swear then they rise and they walk in circles for awhile then they sit and stare had a room in the pyramid but it was not an oasis more like a tomb where my treasures hid and I could fashion my phrases I would only leave the chamber to check up on the sun while everyone else was throwing their cash into the chasm just for fun.
